West Champaran District was established in the year 1972. It was formerly subdivision of Champaran District when Gandhijee came here. The name Champaran is derived from Champa aranya (the forest of Champa - Magnolia) . The headquarter of this district is Bettiah. It is said that Bettiah got its name from Bet (cane plant, a type of grash) commonly found in this district.
The history of district is started with Bettiah Raj At the time when Sarkar Champaran passed under British rule, it was in the possession of Raja Jugal Kishore Singh. Continue with this dinesty, Raja Harendra Kishore Singh, the last Maharaja of Bettiah, died in 1893. The estate came under the management of Court of Wards since 1897 and was held by the Maharani Janki Kuwar.
By 1918 the long standing misery of the indigo cultivators came to an end and Champaran became the hub of Indian National Freedom Movement and the launch pad of Gandhi’s Satyagraha.
Recently it was famous as MINI CHAMBAL and The industry of Kidnapping but the situation is not so unpleasant now. The scenario has been changed and the area continue to become a hub of education and cultural resources. THARU janjati occupies the dence of this district and they have thier rich and varient cultur.
